Qatar highlights UNRWA’s central role in New York
New York, November 14 (Hibya) – Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, Second Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission, emphasized the central role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in addressing the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people.
According to a statement from the ministry, the State of Qatar underscored UNRWA’s central role in meeting the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people. This point was also highlighted in the New York Declaration of the High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Resolution of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.
In the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani stated that UNRWA, established in 1949, continues to provide vital services and humanitarian assistance to more than five million Palestinian refugees in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
Al-Thani emphasized that the responsibilities of the agency have significantly increased, particularly due to the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. He also noted that the ceasefire reached on October 13 in Sharm el-Sheikh, in cooperation with Qatar, Egypt, Türkiye, and the United States, aims to end the bloodshed and humanitarian suffering in Gaza.
