Trump says the U.S. will allow the sale of powerful AI chips to China
Washington, December 9 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has granted Nvidia permission to sell its powerful H200 artificial intelligence chip in China, and that in return he would receive 25% of the revenue. This marked a major gain for the U.S. chipmaker after weeks of internal discussions.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “I informed Chinese President Xi that the United States will allow NVIDIA to send its H200 products to approved customers in China and other countries under conditions that ensure the continuation of strong National Security.” He added that Xi had “responded positively.”
The approval to sell the H200 in China provided a significant boost for Nvidia and its CEO Jensen Huang, after Huang visited Capitol Hill and met Trump in person.
A Nvidia spokesperson confirmed the deal, calling it “a great, thoughtful balance for America.”
This policy move followed weeks of internal debate over how much chip restrictions should be loosened, and whether chip sales to China would serve U.S. interests or pose a security risk.
A White House official described the move to Politico as a “compromise position,” falling short of Nvidia’s efforts to gain approval for selling more advanced chips.
