CNN: US used nearly a quarter of its missile defense systems in Israel-Iran war
Stockholm, July 28 (Hibya) – According to CNN, citing two sources familiar with the operation, the US used nearly a quarter of its advanced THAAD missile defense systems during Israel’s 12-day war with Iran in June.
US forces responded to Tehran’s ballistic missile attacks by launching over 100 and possibly up to 150 THAAD interceptors. Sources said these systems represent a significant portion of America’s advanced air defense stockpile. The US has seven THAAD systems, two of which were deployed in Israel during the conflict.
The rapid usage of so many THAAD systems in such a short time revealed a vulnerability in the US missile defense network and led to the depletion of a costly asset at a time when American public support for Israel’s defense is at historical lows.
Former US defense officials and missile experts told CNN that the swift depletion has raised concerns about America’s global security posture and its ability to rapidly replenish supplies.
According to the Pentagon’s 2026 budget estimates, the US produced only 11 new THAAD interceptors last year, and only 12 more are expected to be added in this fiscal year.
