General strike paralyzes life in Argentina
Buenos Aires, April 10 (Hibya) - Public transportation services in Argentina were disrupted yesterday due to a general strike by the country's main labor unions. All domestic flights and train services in Buenos Aires and other locations were canceled. Freight transport was also significantly affected, and many shops remained closed.
Unions are protesting President Javier Milei's sweeping cuts, and this marks the third general strike since he came to power at the end of 2023.
Public transport services in Argentina were disrupted due to the general strike organized by major unions. All domestic flights and trains in Buenos Aires and other areas were canceled. Freight transport was significantly hampered, and many stores closed.
Milei eliminated some ministries, reduced state funding, and dismissed over 42,000 public employees.
Members of CGT, the country’s largest trade union federation — including train conductors, teachers, customs officers, garbage collectors, and postal workers — went on strike Wednesday. Bus drivers did not join due to ongoing wage negotiations.
There is widespread public dissatisfaction in Argentina with Milei’s austerity measures. Unions say these measures disproportionately affect society's most vulnerable, including retirees and low-income workers.
