Naftogaz: Ukraine Signs First Gas Import Deal with Azerbaijan
Moscow, July 28 (Hibya) – Serhiy Koretsky, chairman of the board of Ukraine-based Naftogaz, announced that Ukraine has signed its first agreement to import gas from Azerbaijan.
Koretsky stated that the supply is for testing purposes and in small volumes, and will be carried out through the Trans-Balkan corridor.
In early July, then-Energy Minister of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko discussed the possibility of gas supply from Azerbaijan with his Azerbaijani counterpart Parviz Shahbazov.
On his Facebook page, Koretsky wrote: “For the first time, Ukraine is importing Azerbaijani gas via the Trans-Balkan Corridor. The first gas purchase agreement was signed with SOCAR Energy Ukraine, a subsidiary of the SOCAR group. The test delivery is being conducted through the Bulgaria–Romania–Ukraine border route. This is a small but strategically significant step toward long-term cooperation.”
On June 9, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Kucherenko warned that Ukraine faces the risk of a real gas shortage this winter, with an estimated shortfall of about 10 billion cubic meters of fuel needed for the heating season.
