Merz: Russia today has the opportunity to accept a ceasefire and end hostilities
Berlin, August 15 (Hibya) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a statement regarding the upcoming meeting in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chancellor Merz emphasized that, three and a half years after the illegal attack on Ukraine, Russia today has the opportunity to accept a ceasefire and end hostilities.
He expressed the expectation that Putin will take U.S. President Trump’s offer of dialogue seriously and, after the meeting in Alaska, begin unconditional negotiations with Ukraine. “In recent days, Germany, standing alongside Ukraine and its European allies, has been charting a path toward peace that considers the core security interests of Europe and Ukraine,” Merz said.
He stressed that the goal should be a summit also attended by President Zelensky: “A ceasefire must be achieved at the summit. Ukraine needs strong security guarantees. Territorial issues can only be resolved with the consent of the Ukrainians.”
