At least 4 dead, 516 injured in major explosion at Iranian port
Stockholm, April 26 (Hibya) – According to official media, at least four people were killed and more than 500 injured in a major explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port in southern Iran. Authorities suggested the fire was caused by the explosion of chemical containers.
A spokesperson for Iran’s crisis management unit said that poor storage conditions of chemicals triggered the explosion at the port. Crisis management spokesman Hossein Zafari told Iran’s ILNA news agency, "The explosions were caused by the chemicals inside the containers," adding that port management had previously been warned about the dangers posed by the chemicals.
The Iranian government has not yet officially stated the exact cause of the explosion but suspects flammable chemicals were involved.
The provincial prosecutor has ordered a "comprehensive and urgent" investigation into the conditions of the explosion, which local officials said began in several containers at the port.
Shahid Rajaee is a major Iranian container facility through which about 80 million tons of goods, including fuel and other flammable materials, pass each year. It is part of Iran’s largest port, Bandar Abbas.
