Bernie Sanders becomes the first U.S. senator to say Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
Washington, September 18 (Hibya) - Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said on Wednesday that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, calling this conclusion "inevitable," becoming the first U.S. senator to use the term.
Sanders wrote: "Over the past two years, Israel has not only defended itself against Hamas, it has waged an all-out war against the entire Palestinian people."
Sanders had long faced criticism from both supporters and protesters for avoiding this term; last year in Ireland he said in a speech that hearing protesters chant it made him feel "sickened."
On Monday, an independent U.N. expert commission concluded that Israel's actions "meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention."
