Canada plans to recognize Palestine as an independent state
Stockholm, July 31 (Hibya) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced today that Canada plans to recognize Palestine as an independent state at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The Israeli Embassy in Canada condemned the decision in a statement.
France and the United Kingdom had previously announced their intentions to recognize Palestine’s independence.
However, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer laid out conditions for Israel. He stated that if Israel does not take meaningful steps to end the tragedy in Gaza and does not accept a long-term ceasefire based on the two-state solution principle, the UK will recognize Palestine as an independent state.
Other countries that had already recognized Palestine signed a two-state solution declaration between Israel and Palestine yesterday at the conclusion of a UN conference.
The declaration emphasized the importance of unifying Gaza and the West Bank under Palestinian administration.
