China urges Taiwan citizens not to travel to Japan
Stockholm, 15 November (Hibya) — China has urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan and summoned Japan’s ambassador in Beijing over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks regarding Taiwan.
China and Japan have engaged in an increasingly heated war of words this week. The dispute began after Takaichi suggested that Japan might respond with its own self-defense forces if China were to attack Taiwan.
The foreign ministries of both countries issued strong protests to one another. A Chinese diplomat also made a remark that some interpreted as a threat to “behead” Takaichi.
The dispute highlights not only the historical hostility between China and Japan but also the long-standing “strategic ambiguity” surrounding the sovereignty of self-ruled Taiwan.
