Prof. Dr. Emmez: Not every brain tumor is malignant
Prof. Dr. Hakan Emmez, a Neurosurgery Specialist at Güven Hospital, stated that headaches that increase in the morning and worsen throughout the day may be among the first signs of a brain tumor.
Prof. Dr. Hakan Emmez explained that headaches which intensify in the morning could be an early symptom of a brain tumor, saying: “Brain tumors are not always malignant, but depending on their location, they can lead to serious neurological damage. Therefore, early diagnosis plays a critical role in treatment success and in preventing permanent damage.”
Emmez emphasized that early detection of brain tumors plays a decisive role in the success of treatment. He added, “Tumors affecting such a vital organ as the brain are not always malignant, but depending on their location, they can cause significant neurological symptoms. When such signs appear, one should promptly consult a specialist neurosurgeon.”
Prof. Emmez noted that brain tumors occur in approximately 30–40 people per 100,000: “Although they are less common than lung, breast, or prostate cancers, their development in such a delicate organ as the brain makes early diagnosis and proper treatment extremely important.”
“Even benign tumors can cause serious effects”
He explained that tumors are divided into two groups based on their origin: primary and secondary (metastatic). “In addition to primary tumors that originate from brain cells, metastatic tumors — those that spread from cancers in other organs — are also common. Even a benign tumor can press against brain tissue and cause serious neurological damage.”
“Genetic predisposition and radiation are major risk factors”
Emmez stated that the exact cause of brain tumors is not fully known, but genetic factors and radiation exposure may play a role. “Certain genetic diseases — such as neurofibromatosis types 1 and 2, and Li-Fraumeni syndrome — increase the risk of developing brain tumors. Additionally, people with a history of high-dose radiotherapy are more likely to develop such tumors.”
“Morning headaches may be a warning sign”
He added that the symptoms of brain tumors vary depending on their location: “Headaches that worsen in the morning, nausea, vomiting, imbalance, visual disturbances, epileptic seizures, and speech difficulties can all be warning signs of a brain tumor.”
“MRI is the most effective diagnostic method”
He noted that after a neurological examination, imaging techniques are used: “Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides the most detailed information about the tumor’s location, size, and its relationship with surrounding tissues. When necessary, a biopsy is performed to determine the tumor’s type and grade.”
“Treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach”
Prof. Emmez emphasized that the treatment of brain tumors involves a personalized plan combining surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and follow-up: “The treatment process is carried out through the collaboration of neurosurgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, neurology, and endocrinology specialists. Thanks to technologies such as neuronavigation, neuromonitoring, and fluorescence-guided surgery, it is possible to remove the maximum amount of tumor tissue while preserving healthy brain tissue.”
“Not every tumor is malignant”
Prof. Emmez concluded: “Not every brain tumor is malignant, and some types can remain under observation for years. Thanks to advances in medical technology, diagnosis and treatment are now much safer, more effective, and more personalized. Recognizing symptoms early and consulting a specialist can greatly reduce the risk of permanent damage.”
