Floods in Spain’s Catalonia region trap people in vehicles
Madrid, October 13 (Hibya) – Authorities said that heavy rains caused floods in Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region, leaving many people trapped in their vehicles.
Videos shared on social media showed muddy floodwaters sweeping through the towns of La Ràpita and Santa Barbara in the province of Tarragona, carrying away everything in their path.
Spain’s national meteorological agency, AEMET, issued the highest red alert for the coastal province.
No deaths or injuries have been reported so far.
The Catalonia Civil Protection Agency urged residents of the Ebro Delta in Tarragona to stay at home. AEMET warned that up to 180 mm of rain could fall in the region within 12 hours.
“The situation is complex and more rain is expected,” said Cristina Vicente, a senior official from the agency, speaking to *La Vanguardia* newspaper.
Train services between Barcelona and Valencia, mostly along the coastal Mediterranean Corridor, have been suspended until further notice.
In recent days, many parts of southeastern Spain, including the Balearic Islands, have also been affected by heavy rains and flooding.
The severe weather conditions have been caused by Storm Alice in the western Mediterranean.
