German Chancellor Merz: A 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine possible within days
Brussels, May 10 (Hibya) – Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that a 30-day ceasefire agreement in Ukraine is on the agenda and could be implemented within the next few days, but "the ball is now solely in Moscow’s court."
During his first visit to Brussels on Friday, speaking alongside European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Merz said: "After today, which is celebrated as Victory Day in Russia, we have a great chance for a ceasefire in Ukraine."
He reiterated this belief in a separate press conference at NATO headquarters with Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"There is a possibility of a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine this weekend," Merz emphasized.
The German Chancellor added: "Ukraine has agreed to it. The United States initiated and proposed it, and major European powers have clearly accepted it. I can say this is a good thing for the entire European Union and NATO."
"After (this) weekend and the start of next week, we will see whether a longer ceasefire will happen, and then we will create room for dialogue towards lasting peace in Ukraine."
"This is a very clear and direct test of the seriousness of the Russian president's willingness to actually establish peace in Ukraine," he said.
Ukraine had accepted a 30-day urgent ceasefire proposed by U.S. mediators in Saudi Arabia in March.
