Ghebreyesus: Medical evacuations from Gaza must be accelerated
Geneva, 26 November (Hibya) – WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made a statement regarding the medical evacuations from Gaza.
Ghebreyesus stated that on Monday WHO evacuated 33 patients and 109 companions from Gaza to Jordan, noting that some patients will be transferred to other countries in the coming days for advanced treatment.
He highlighted delays during the evacuation process, emphasizing that patients arriving from the Kerem Shalom crossing to the Allenby Bridge together with the WHO team were forced to wait for more than four hours, further endangering their already fragile health.
Since October 2023, more than 10,000 patients have been medically evacuated from Gaza along with over 12,000 companions to more than 30 countries. Ghebreyesus stressed that more than 16,500 patients still await evacuation because they cannot access advanced medical care inside Gaza.
He called on more countries to accept these patients and provide them with access to specialized medical services. Ghebreyesus also urged the opening of all evacuation routes — particularly those toward East Jerusalem and the West Bank — and the speeding up of medical evacuation convoy crossings.
