Inisa Karan becomes the new president of Republika Srpska
Stockholm, 24 November (Hibya) – Inisa Karan, an ally of former president Milorad Dodik — who was sentenced to prison and banned from political activity — has won the presidential election in Republika Srpska, one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to preliminary results, Karan received 50.89% of the votes, while her opponent Branko Blanusa received 47.81%.
Dodik was sentenced to prison and barred from politics for refusing to comply with the orders of the High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, who is responsible for implementing the 1995 Dayton Agreement that ended the Bosnian War and carries broad powers.
Karan previously served as interior minister in Dodik’s government and benefited from his support during the campaign. Dodik remains the leader of their joint political party, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD).
On Sunday evening, Dodik stated: “I see this personally as support for myself in an almost impossible situation. They wanted to get rid of Dodik through a completely unjust political process, and now they have two Dodiks. They will have to face this every day.”
