Many countries warn their citizens about the growing danger in Iran
Washington, Jan. 15 (Hibya) — Many countries are urging people to avoid travel to Iran or to leave immediately due to the crackdown on anti-government protests.
A U.S. official told CNN that some personnel at the largest American military base in the Middle East were asked, “as a precaution,” to leave the base in Qatar. Yesterday, President Donald Trump advised all U.S. citizens in the country to leave Iran.
The Qatari government said it continues to take “all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of its citizens and residents,” shortly after the U.S. called for some personnel to depart the Al-Udeid Air Base.
The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia called for “heightened caution” among U.S. citizens and staff, encouraging them to “limit unnecessary travel to any military facility in the region.”
Italy’s Foreign Ministry urged its citizens to leave Iran and said it has taken measures to protect its forces in the Middle East, including in Iraq and Kuwait.
German authorities advised airlines to avoid Iranian airspace due to the potential use of “anti-aircraft weapons.” Separately, German airline Lufthansa announced it will operate flights to Tel Aviv and Amman during daylight hours only.
The British government announced that its embassy in Tehran has been temporarily closed and all staff withdrawn from Iran. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office also advised against all travel to Iran.
Spain advised its citizens to leave Iran “by all available means” and strongly urged them to avoid travel to the country.
India’s embassy in Tehran advised Indian nationals to leave Iran “via available routes.” The Indian government also “strongly advised” its citizens to avoid travel to the country. Meanwhile, Air India announced it will reroute its flights in the region.
