Russian Academy of Sciences: Kamchatka earthquake is a planetary-scale event
Moscow, July 30 (Hibya) – Danila Chebrov, Director General of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated that the earthquake in Kamchatka is a planetary-scale event.
Chebrov said: “This is a very powerful event on a nearly planetary scale. Due to some features of the focal process, the intensity was moderate, and the absence of mass casualties was a great stroke of luck.”
He added that the quake's intensity was lower than expected for a magnitude of 8.8. According to him, aftershocks may reach a magnitude of 7.5. They won’t be destructive, but they will be noticeable and could trigger a tsunami.
Earlier in the day, a powerful earthquake near Avacha Bay in Kamchatka raised a tsunami threat. As a result, a kindergarten wall in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky collapsed.
Later, Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko reported that the first wave of the tsunami had hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk.
