Tykhyi: Attacks on media are serious violations
Istanbul, June 6 (Hibya) – Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that attacks on the media are serious violations of international humanitarian law.
Tykhyi noted that Ukraine celebrates Journalists’ Day and expressed gratitude to all reporters who work tirelessly, often taking great risks, to provide fact-based stories to audiences around the world.
“In the age of information, few professions are more important,” said Tykhyi. “According to the Ukrainian Institute of Mass Information, Russia has killed 106 journalists during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Forty-two journalists have been injured while reporting. Horrific numbers.”
Tykhyi emphasized that attacks on the media constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law, and said:
“All such crimes must be investigated and the perpetrators held accountable. Since 2014, Russia has kidnapped 112 journalists during its aggression against Ukraine. Thirty journalists are currently held in Russian captivity. We strongly urge the international community to demand their immediate release.”
