UN High Commissioner Türk: Human rights are under threat
New York, September 15 (Hibya) – United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that human rights are under threat, stressing that disturbing trends are dismantling the protective framework of international law and undermining social cohesion.
Türk emphasized that freedom, equality, and justice are the values that form the foundation of human rights.
He added that these values are not political or ideological, but align with the moral essence of being human, and said:
“Human rights are legal obligations, but they are much more than that. Yet today, human rights are under threat. Disturbing trends are dismantling the protective framework of international law and undermining social cohesion. Long-standing laws of war are being openly disregarded; almost no one is held accountable.”
Türk noted that hate speech and discrimination against minorities further divide people, stating: “Inequalities are deepening. But when human rights are under threat, they are also the medicine we need to heal our fractured world.”
