US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Relief Foundation ends aid operations
Stockholm, November 25 (Hibya) – The controversial Gaza Humanitarian Relief Foundation (GHF), backed by the United States and Israel, has announced that it is ending its aid operations in the Palestinian territories after roughly six months.
Following the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel that came into effect six weeks ago, the organization had already suspended its three food distribution centers in Gaza.
GHF aimed to sideline the UN, which is the main provider of assistance to the people of Gaza. The UN and other aid organizations refused to cooperate with this system, arguing that it was unethical and unsafe.
According to the UN, in chaotic scenes near GHF centers, hundreds of Palestinians were killed – mostly by Israeli fire – while searching for food. Israel has said that its soldiers fired warning shots.
In a statement on Monday, GHF said it was ending its activities because its “emergency mission has been successfully completed”, adding that a total of three million packages – equivalent to more than 187 million meals – had been distributed to Palestinians.
