American man who fatally stabbed Palestinian child sentenced to 53 years in prison
Washington, May 3 (Hibya) – An Illinois farm owner has been sentenced to 53 years in prison for fatally stabbing a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy and severely injuring his mother.
Joseph Czuba, 73, was found guilty in February of murder and hate crimes in the killing of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of his mother, Hanan Shaheen, shortly after the Israel-Gaza war began.
The family had been living as tenants in Czuba’s home in Plainfield, about 64 km from Chicago. Prosecutors said the victims were targeted because of their Muslim faith.
Czuba pleaded not guilty, but the jury found him guilty after less than 90 minutes of deliberation.
According to NBC News, Wadee Alfayoumi’s great-uncle, Mahmud Yusuf, told the court on Friday that no sentence could “justify” the child’s death.
“On the day he was killed, his father had memories and plans for his son. He had no right to take that away,” he said.
