Around 200 people killed in ferry accidents in Congo
Stockholm, September 13 (Hibya) – This week, at least 193 people died in two ferry accidents in the northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo. The accidents occurred on Wednesday and Thursday in Équateur Province, about 150 kilometers apart.
On Thursday, about 500 people were aboard the ferry that sank. According to the Congolese Ministry of Humanitarian Aid, the ferry was sailing on the Congo River in Lukolela Province. A total of 209 people were rescued from the disaster.
A day earlier, in Basankusu District, a motorboat capsized, killing at least 86 people, most of them students. State media reported that more people were missing, but the number was not specified.
In Congo, ferry accidents have become increasingly common in recent years. Many people rely on ferries on the country’s rivers for transportation between regions. Ferries rarely have life jackets and often carry far more passengers than they are designed to. In addition, ferries frequently operate at night, making rescue operations even more complicated.
