At Least 3 Dead, 50 Injured in Train Accident in Germany
Stockholm, July 28 (Hibya) – At least three people were killed and around 50 injured, 25 of them seriously, when a passenger train derailed in the Biberach region of southern Germany on Saturday night.
The accident is believed to have been caused by a landslide. The region had experienced heavy rainfall earlier.
According to Federal Police, around 100 people were aboard the regional express train. While emergency crews prepared to lift the derailed wagons, it was announced that the rail line would remain closed until further notice.
In the early hours following the accident, little was known about the cause. Federal Police experts continued collecting evidence throughout the night. On platform X, the Federal Police and Deutsche Bahn extended their condolences to the victims’ families and mentioned an “unknown cause” for the accident.
Following a visit by Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) shortly after the incident, other senior politicians are expected to visit the site today. Along with Baden-Württemberg Premier Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) also confirmed his attendance. According to SWR, Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz and Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) also plan to visit the accident site. Police added that clean-up, rescue, and investigation efforts are ongoing.
