Bangladesh’s Rahman elected President of the 81st UN General Assembly session
New York, June 3 (Hibya) - The United Nations General Assembly elected Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as President of its 81st session. Rahman will take office during a year expected to be dominated by major global crises and UN reform efforts.
The United Nations General Assembly elected Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as President of its 81st session in a secret ballot held in New York.
Rahman received 99 votes, while his opponent, Cypriot candidate Andreas Kakouris, secured 91 votes. A total of 190 votes were cast, with no invalid ballots or abstentions.
The presidency of the General Assembly rotates among five regional groups, and this term falls to the Asia-Pacific Group. Rahman will preside over the Assembly’s work during a one-year term beginning on September 8, 2026.
His term will coincide with a critical period in which UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ mandate will end on December 31, 2026, and a new Secretary-General will be selected. Growing global crises and debates on UN reform are also expected to dominate the agenda.
In his acceptance speech, Rahman said he was assuming the responsibility “with humility and respect” at a time when confidence in the international system is weakening, adding that the UN faces serious challenges as it enters its ninth decade.
