Baqaei: Canada chose to appease its bullying neighbor even further
Tehran, September 8 (Hibya) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei reacted to Canada's statements on Iran, accusing the country of supporting US policies in the region.
Baqaei noted that on the day US President Donald Trump displayed a dismissive attitude toward Canada's sovereignty and independence, Canada's foreign and finance ministers signed a statement targeting Iran.
Baqaei said, “On the day the US President openly displayed a dismissive attitude toward Canada's sovereignty and independence and portrayed the entire country as part of the United States, Canada chose to appease its bullying neighbor even further.”
Commenting on the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei argued that the strait had been open and safe before the US and Israeli attack on Iran. Baqaei said, “Canada cannot credibly present itself as a defender of ‘peace and security,’ ‘freedom of navigation’ and ‘international law’ while supporting US military aggression in our region and Washington's illegal, interventionist actions.”
Baqaei also questioned Canada's support for US policies on the grounds of defending freedom of navigation.
The Iranian spokesperson said, “If freedom of navigation is really the issue, why does Canada choose to support US military aggression and economic terrorism instead of calling for an end to US aggression, blockade and economic warfare?”
Criticizing Canada's stance, Baqaei said, “This is neither diplomacy nor responsible statecraft. It is a sign of strategic confusion and submission in the face of intimidation.”
