Budrys: No government should think it can torture its opposition and citizens
Vilnius, March 13 (Hibya) – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys stated that they welcome the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor to launch an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed by the Belarusian government.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Budrys said they strongly support the ICC Prosecutor’s decision to open an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed by the Belarusian authorities against the population.
Budrys noted that they welcome the decision taken after Lithuania’s referral to the International Criminal Court in 2024 and stated that the investigation covers alleged crimes committed against the Belarusian people by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko since May 1, 2020.
Budrys said: “No government should think that it can torture its opposition and citizens, deport them, suppress them or silence them and that this will go without consequences.”
Emphasizing that justice must be served, Budrys stated that widespread and systematic attacks against civilians must be met with a strong and consistent accountability mechanism and that those responsible must be held accountable.
