Costa: EU calls on Iran to allow full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz
Brussels, April 6 (Hibya) - European Council President Antonio Costa, in a statement during the fifth week of the conflict in the Middle East, emphasized that targeting civilian infrastructure is unacceptable and called on the parties for a diplomatic solution and freedom of navigation.
European Council President Antonio Costa made assessments regarding the humanitarian situation and strategic risks in the region following his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Referring to the impact of the conflict on civilians and attacks on infrastructure, Costa said: "After five weeks of war in the Middle East, it is clear that the root causes can only be addressed through a diplomatic solution. Targeting civilian infrastructure, especially energy facilities, is illegal and unacceptable. This also applies to Russia’s war in Ukraine and applies everywhere."
Emphasizing that Iranian civilians must be protected, Costa stated: "The main victims of the Iranian regime are Iranian civilians. The main victims of the expansion of military operations will also be Iranian civilians."
Antonio Costa outlined the expectations of the European Union and the path to a solution with the following remarks:
“The European Union calls on Iran to immediately stop its attacks against countries in the region and to allow the restoration of full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Escalation will not bring about a ceasefire or peace. This can only be achieved through negotiations, namely ongoing efforts led by regional partners.”
