European Council President Antonio Costa said he welcomed the agreement announced between the United States and Iran and expressed hope for an end to the conflict and the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement shared on social media, Costa said he viewed positively the agreement reached and publicly announced between Washington and Tehran.

Emphasizing his appreciation for the diplomatic efforts of all parties that contributed to the agreement, Costa stated: “I look forward to the end of this costly war and the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Costa stressed that the guns must now fall silent and that existing disputes should be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law.

He also noted that the European Union stands ready to contribute to the development of a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
