Costa said that the G20 stands at the beginning of a new cycle in a multipolar world and that its importance is increasing in this process.

He emphasized that the European Union can be relied upon to be present and to fulfill its responsibilities, adding:

“At a time when 3.4 billion people are forced to pay more interest on debt than they receive in healthcare or education, the EU supports the South African Presidency’s efforts to advance the debt sustainability agenda. The EU will also remain a reliable partner in supporting the countries most vulnerable to climate change.”

Costa stated that the EU supports developing countries in reducing emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.
