Dar: We oppose the weaponization of water resources
Islamabad, October 6 (Hibya) - Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar condemned India’s use of water as a weapon at a symposium addressing water security and international cooperation.
According to a statement by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar delivered the opening address via video message at the International Water Symposium organized jointly by Pakistan’s Embassy in Vienna and the Vienna Diplomatic Academy.
The symposium, attended by diplomats, academics and international experts, addressed water security and international cooperation, while a separate session examined the management of transboundary rivers, water rights and obligations under international law and agreements.
Dar condemned India’s use of water as a weapon and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the Indus Waters Treaty. Dar said the Court of Arbitration’s ruling had also confirmed that the treaty remained in force and that its obligations must be upheld, adding that shared rivers should serve peace and cooperation rather than be used as instruments of pressure.
Emphasizing that Pakistan would defend its rights under the treaty, Dar said the international community plays an important role in upholding international law and treaty obligations and in rejecting the weaponization of water.
