EU: Hezbollah must be disarmed and Israeli operations must end
Brussels, March 9 (Hibya) – The European Union’s High Representative warned of the risk that Lebanon could become a new front in the conflict with Iran, emphasizing that Hezbollah’s actions against Israel and Israel’s responses are increasing instability in the region.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas issued a statement regarding developments in Lebanon. The statement said Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel in support of Iran endanger the entire region and escalate the conflict to deadly levels. It also noted that Israel has the right to defend itself in accordance with international law.
The High Representative stated that all proxy groups participating in the war have become legitimate targets, emphasizing that Hezbollah must be disarmed and end all actions against Israel.
The statement stressed that Israel’s responses have been harsh, leading to mass displacement and further destabilizing the fragile situation. It added that Israel must end its operations in Lebanon and respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The EU stated that diplomacy and a return to a ceasefire are the best ways to prevent Lebanon from descending into chaos. Full support was expressed for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the safety of UN peacekeepers must be guaranteed.
The European Union said preventing loss of life, displacement and regional escalation is an urgent priority and called on all parties to respect international law and humanitarian law. It also announced that emergency assistance would be provided to approximately 130,000 affected people and expressed condolences to the families of victims of violence.
