EU reaches preliminary agreement to ban gas imports from Russia
Brussels, December 3 (Hibya) – The European Council and Parliament have reached an agreement on the gradual phase-out of Russian gas imports “for a safe and energy-independent Europe.”
Representatives of the Council Presidency and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on a regulation that foresees the gradual cessation of imports of Russian natural gas. The regulation forms a key element of the EU's REPowerEU roadmap, designed to end dependence on Russian energy after Russia weaponized gas supplies to influence the European energy market.
The regulation introduces a legally binding, phased ban on imports of both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas from Russia, with full bans taking effect at the end of 2026 and in autumn 2027 respectively.
Commenting on the agreement, Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Public Utilities Lars Aagaard said: “This is a major victory for us and for all of Europe. We must end the EU’s dependence on Russian gas, and a permanent ban on Russian gas within the EU is a big step in the right direction. I am very happy and proud that we were able to reach an agreement with the European Parliament so quickly. This shows our determination to strengthen our security and safeguard our energy supply.”
