EU warns about escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis in Congo
Brussels, 10 December (Hibya) – EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib stated that the capture of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo by the M23 group has once again put civilians at risk.
Lahbib noted that the renewed fighting in the region seriously undermines the peace agreement signed last week between Rwanda and Congo.
Emphasising that peace must be felt tangibly on the ground and ensure the protection of the population, Lahbib said the humanitarian crisis is worsening and thousands have fled to Burundi. She added that the EU has allocated 3 million euros to support refugees in Burundi and stressed that civilians can no longer bear the cost of instability.
