First round of repeated presidential elections held today in Romania
Bucharest, May 4 (Hibya) – The first round of Romania's repeated presidential elections is being held today. The Constitutional Court annulled the results of the November elections and ordered a new vote after the winning candidate was disqualified. A right-wing candidate is expected to win.
After the Constitutional Court annulled the November elections based on evidence that Călin Georgescu's social media campaign was illegally financed by Russia, Romanians are heading to the polls today.
Although Călin Georgescu won the first round, he was ultimately barred from running again, triggering a wave of violent protests. Eleven candidates are contesting today’s election, with right-wing candidate George Simion currently leading.
George Simion frequently criticizes the European Union and Russia, and wants to cut off aid to Ukraine. He has expressed strong admiration for former U.S. President Donald Trump and is often seen wearing a red MAGA cap.
Other candidates include government-backed Crin Antonescu, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, and former Prime Minister Victor Ponta. If no one wins more than half the vote, a second round will be held on May 18.
