Athens, October 2 (Hibya) - Greece has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the second time during its current term as an elected member.
In a statement, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Greece assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the second time as of October 1, 2026.
It was stated that the work of the Security Council, which under the Charter of the United Nations bears primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, will address developments in Ukraine and the broader Middle East, as well as other regional and international crises. The annual joint meeting of the UN Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council will also be held.
The statement noted that the process of selecting the new UN Secretary-General will also be of importance during the presidency. As rotating president, Greece will be responsible for helping secure the necessary consensus among Security Council members in determining the new Secretary-General.
As part of Greece’s presidency, a high-level event on freedom of navigation and maritime security based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) will be held on October 29. Special sessions will also be organized on priorities such as the protection of civilians, particularly children, in armed conflicts, and the role of women in international peace and security.

Gerapetritis stated that Greece, as an elected member of the Security Council and a country with a strong international diplomatic presence, will work to strengthen effective multilateralism, an international order based on principles and rules, and the peaceful role of the United Nations.
Gerapetritis also said that Greece will actively contribute to efforts to maintain international peace and security by cooperating with members of the Security Council.
