Guterres: I am deeply concerned about developments in Guinea-Bissau
New York, 28 November (Hibya) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is deeply concerned about developments in Guinea-Bissau and strongly condemns the attempted coup carried out by military elements as well as any interference with the constitutional order.
UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed deep concern over the developments in Guinea-Bissau.
Condemning in strong terms the coup attempt by military elements and any interference with the constitutional order, Guterres said: “Despite the fact that the people clearly and peacefully expressed their will in the 23 November general elections, any disrespect for that will constitutes an unacceptable violation of democratic principles.”
Calling for the immediate and unconditional restoration of the constitutional order and the release of all detained officials, he added: “I reiterate the full support of the United Nations for the protection of democracy, the promotion of stability and for helping Guinea-Bissau to complete its electoral process peacefully and swiftly return to the democratic path.”
