Lavrov: NATO and the EU always need an enemy
Moscow, September 4 (Hibya) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the foreign policy approaches of Western institutions and their domestic political dynamics.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov argued that NATO and the European Union (EU) rely on an artificially created perception of a Russian threat in order to sustain their existence.
Stating that Western alliances act on the basis of an enemy perception, Lavrov said, "NATO and the EU always need an enemy."
Drawing attention to the domestic political implications of such rhetoric, Lavrov said, "If there were no artificially created image of Russia as an enemy, people in the vast majority of EU and NATO countries would overthrow their governments."
