French President Emmanuel Macron issued a message of condolence following the death of former Estonian Prime Minister Siim Kallas.

Macron highlighted Kallas’s significant contribution to European integration, saying, “With the passing of Siim Kallas, Europe has lost one of its most committed advocates.”

Noting that Kallas played an important role in Estonia’s integration with Europe, Macron said that following the restoration of the country’s independence, Kallas took on key responsibilities in processes ranging from the creation of its national currency to accession to the European Union and the euro.

Macron said that Kallas, as Prime Minister of Estonia and Vice-President of the European Commission, served the reunification of Europe, and offered his condolences to the Estonian people, Kallas’s daughter Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and his family.
