NATO announces more air support to defend Poland in the future
Brussels, September 13 (Hibya) – NATO leaders announced at a press conference on Friday that France, Germany, and Denmark will contribute fighter jets and other military equipment to better defend Poland against future Russian drone attacks.
The United Kingdom is also expected to contribute to the “Eastern Sentinel” mission, which will be gradually expanded from the Arctic in the north to the Black Sea and Mediterranean in the south, to better counter Russian drones and missiles.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said: “In addition to more traditional military capabilities, this effort will include elements specifically designed to address challenges related to the use of drones.”
Early Wednesday morning, 21 Russian drones, believed to be unarmed decoys, crossed the Polish border. Only three or four were reported to have been shot down, and one drone penetrated 265 km into the country, causing four airports to shut down.
At the time, Donald Trump said the incident “may have been a mistake,” but added: “In any case, I am not happy with anything about this situation.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on social media in English:
“We too would have liked the drone attack on Poland to have been a mistake. But it was not a mistake. And we know it.”
However, Rutte maintained his hesitation. On Friday, he said that NATO’s “assessment of Wednesday’s events is ongoing,” but stressed: “Whether Russia’s actions were deliberate or not, Russia violated NATO airspace, and this requires a response.”
