Nearly one million people evacuated in the Philippines as second typhoon strikes
Stockholm, November 10 (Hibya) – A second typhoon within a week hit the Philippines, killing at least two people. Nearly one million residents fled their homes to escape destructive winds and life-threatening storm surges.
Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, followed Typhoon Kalmaegi, which claimed around 200 lives in the central part of the archipelago and five more in Vietnam.
According to the country’s meteorological service, the eye of the typhoon made landfall on Sunday night, passing over the coastal municipality of Dinalungan in the northeastern province of Aurora.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, about 920,000 people from 11 regions were evacuated on Sunday.
Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) president Butch Meily told CNN, “People are a bit in shock,” noting that this was the country’s fourth major typhoon in the past seven weeks, in addition to two recent earthquakes.
“We’re preparing, but this is beginning to test our level of experience,” Meily added.
Fung-wong is expected to affect the eastern and northern regions of the country, including Luzon, the most populous island and home to Manila, as well as the Visayas islands and Siargao, known as the nation’s surfing capital.
