NORAD sends aircraft to U.S. base in Greenland
Stockholm, January 20 (Hibya) – The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced that it will send aircraft to the U.S. space base of Pituffik in northwestern Greenland.
The Colorado-based command said the deployment of the aircraft is coordinated with Denmark and that all relevant forces are “operating with the necessary diplomatic clearances.” The government of Greenland has also been informed.
The command stated: “NORAD regularly conducts long-term and distributed operations for the defense of North America; these operations are carried out through one or all three NORAD regions (Alaska, Canada, and the continental United States).”
The number or type of aircraft has not been specified, but according to the command they will “support a range of long-planned NORAD activities.”
Pituffik is the northernmost U.S. military base and supports missile warning, defense, and space surveillance operations.
