Russia: Ukraine must return to neutral status to resolve the conflict
Moscow, January 24 (Hibya) – Alexei Polischuk, Director of the Second CIS Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Ukraine must return to a non-aligned status in order to resolve the conflict.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Polischuk said: “Ukraine must return to the roots of its statehood – a non-aligned, neutral and non-nuclear status.”
He also added that Kyiv must restore respect for the language and religious rights and freedoms of individuals, ethnic Russians, Russian-speaking citizens and national minorities, and abandon neo-Nazi ideology.
On January 23, the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung wrote that Ukraine should make peace on terms acceptable to Russia. According to the newspaper, Kyiv’s biggest problems are internal issues, the dire situation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the front and a lack of support from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The author of the article noted that Ukraine should abandon its plans to join NATO, make territorial concessions and accept that foreign military forces will not be deployed on its territory.
Earlier, on January 14, Trump said that it was Ukraine, not Moscow, that had been drawn into the crisis. He also stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to end the conflict in Ukraine, while Kyiv leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy is less eager.
The first round of talks between representatives of Russia, the United States and Ukraine, held in the UAE, concluded yesterday.
A Russian working delegation responsible for security issues took part in the meeting, headed by Admiral Igor Kostyukov, Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
