Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Providing information about the content of the meeting, Sanchez said: “I held a meeting with Ghebreyesus regarding the arrival of the MV Hondius ship to the Canary Islands.”

Highlighting Spain’s humanitarian responsibilities, Sanchez stated: “Accepting the WHO’s request and offering a safe port is a moral and legal obligation toward our citizens, Europe, and international law.”

Sanchez summarized his country’s stance in this process with the following words:

“Spain will always stand by those in need of help. Because some decisions define who we are as a society.”
