A fourth person was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Local police launched an investigation into the shooting that occurred at around 4:40 p.m. local time in Lake Cargelligo.

Police also urged the public to stay away from the area and advised local residents to remain in their homes. According to local reports, the gunman has not yet been apprehended.

Two women and one man were killed in the attack.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the incident is suspected to be a case of domestic violence.

It was also reported that authorities are still trying to locate the gunman and that heavily armed tactical police units have been deployed.

Seven News reported that the gunman fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to the local council.
