The U.S. president, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, added that he believes Iran wants to reach a deal regarding its nuclear program.

The second round of talks in Switzerland comes after repeated military threats against Iran over its deadly crackdown on anti-government protests and the ongoing dispute over its nuclear program.

On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry in Tehran said it believes the U.S. position on the nuclear issue is moving "in a more realistic direction."

Iran says Tuesday’s meeting, to be mediated by Oman, will focus on the nuclear program and the potential lifting of economic sanctions imposed by the United States. Washington had previously indicated it also wanted to discuss other issues such as Iran’s missile stockpile.

Calling the talks "very important," Trump suggested that Tehran is motivated to negotiate this time. "I think they don’t want to see the consequences of not making a deal," Trump said, adding that Iran learned the consequences of taking a hard line last summer after the U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear facilities.

"We could have made a deal instead of sending B-2s to destroy their nuclear capabilities. And we had to send the B-2s," Trump said, referring to the stealth bombers that carried out the strikes. "I hope they behave more reasonably."

The president’s threats come amid a U.S. military buildup in the Middle East over the past several weeks.

BBC Verify confirmed using satellite imagery that the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is near Iran.

It is also reported that the United States has sent the world’s largest warship, USS Gerald R Ford, to the Middle East, and the vessel could reach the region within the next three weeks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met Monday with the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog and said in a post on X that he was in Geneva to "reach a fair and equal agreement."
