United States (US) President Donald Trump announced a new tariff decision regarding trade with Canada.

Trump argued that Canada’s high tariffs on US farmers and agricultural products had created a major deficit in trade between the two countries and announced that tariffs on automobiles, trucks, automotive parts and steel imported from Canada would be increased.

In a post on his social media account, Trump claimed that Canada had been “taking advantage of” the United States for years. Saying that Canada’s “extremely high tariffs” on US farmers and agricultural products had made life difficult for American producers, Trump stated that this situation had long resulted in a $60 billion trade deficit between the two countries.

Arguing that the situation was unsustainable, Trump announced that beginning January 1, 2027, tariffs on all automobiles, trucks, large and small vehicles, automotive parts and steel products brought into the United States from Canada would be raised to 50 percent.

Trump said no tariffs would be imposed on companies that manufacture in the United States, delivering the message: “Build in the US, zero tariff.”

Stating that relations with Canada would no longer be treated as though Canada were a state, Trump argued that Canada was “one of the most difficult countries in the world” for the United States, particularly in trade and other areas.

Trump also claimed that Canada viewed itself as privileged in its relationship with the United States, arguing that the US did not need Canada, while Canada needed the US.

Referring to the volume of trade between the two countries, Trump claimed that Canada conducted 95 percent of its trade with the United States and argued that this demonstrated the imbalance in commercial relations between the two countries.
