Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna attended the reopening of the School of Fine Arts in the Ukrainian city of Malyn. Tsahkna highlighted the importance of bringing back into use a space where children can study, create and discover their talents.

Tsahkna said he knows firsthand the contribution that music and art can make to a person’s life, saying: “Having grown up playing an instrument and singing in a choir, I know the value that music and art can add to a person’s life.” Tsahkna also said he had the opportunity to play the piano during the opening.

Tsahkna noted that the wartime conditions in the region were also reflected in the opening ceremony, saying that a significant part of the event was held in a shelter because Russian drones were threatening the area.

Tsahkna said that as part of the work carried out by Estonia and its partners, they are not only rebuilding structures destroyed by Russia but also strengthening the school’s education, curriculum and management structure. He said: “Reconstruction is about giving children in Ukraine the opportunity to grow, develop and build their own future.”
