Tsunami Destroys Russian Geographical Society Tent Camp on Kuril Island Shumshu
Moscow, July 30 (Hibya) – The press service of the Sakhalin Region government reported that a tent camp belonging to the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) was swept away by a tsunami wave on Shumshu (Northern Kuril Islands), with no injuries reported.
The statement said: "The large camp in Shumshu, where search team members were located, was not damaged. It is located in a tsunami-safe zone. A small tent camp belonging to the Russian Geographical Society on the island's eastern coast was also flooded. People were warned in time, and no one was injured."
Shumshu Island, which is uninhabited, is located 11 km from Kamchatka and 2 km from the nearest inhabited area, the Kuril Island of Paramushir.
