Tsunami waves hit Hawaii and California coasts after Kamchatka earthquake
Stockholm, July 30 (Hibya) – Following a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and the issuance of tsunami warnings across Pacific countries, waves have begun to strike the U.S. coasts, including Hawaii and California.
Tsunami warnings remain in effect for the rest of the California coast, including the San Francisco Bay Area, and the coasts of Oregon and Washington.
The National Weather Service advised people to stay away from beaches, ports, and piers until the warnings are lifted.
The mayor of Honolulu urged residents to move to higher ground, and the governor of Hawaii also called on the public to evacuate coastal areas immediately. Governor Josh Green said, “The strike won’t hit just one beach – it will engulf the islands.”
According to the U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a tsunami threat today for Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.
The embassy called on U.S. citizens in these South Pacific regions: “If you are in coastal areas and observe unusual sea activity or feel strong or prolonged shaking, be ready to move to higher ground immediately.”
The embassy's warning added: “Avoid coastal areas, beaches, and rivers until further notice. Make sure your emergency supplies — including water, food, medications, and important documents — are ready.”
