On Monday, the Senate approved a compromise bill that extends federal government funding until January 30.

On Wednesday night, the bill was passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 222 in favor and 209 against.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said in a statement before the vote: “Today I want to apologize to all Americans whose flights are still being canceled. I want to apologize to the American families who have been forced to go hungry in recent weeks and to the federal employees who are wondering when their next paycheck will arrive.”

When he took the floor again, his tone was much tougher. He went on to stress that the Democrats were responsible for the shutdown, saying: “All of this was completely senseless and foolish, and the outcome was entirely predictable. Back in mid-September when it all started, I said this is how it would end, and they did it anyway.”

Donald Trump described the deal as “a very big victory.” The budget still required the president’s final signature in order to be adopted. Just a few hours after the House’s approval, Trump went to the Oval Office to sign the bill.

“Today we are sending a clear message that we will never give in to blackmail,” Trump said. “The country has never been in better shape. Together with the Democrats we got through this short-lived disaster because they thought it would be good for them politically.”

As a result of the failure of Republicans and Democrats to agree on a state budget, the shutdown of the public sector became the longest in the country’s history and led to more than one million civil servants being laid off or forced to work without pay.

This situation led to more than one million public employees being laid off or forced to work without pay.

The U.S. Congress consists of the Senate, with 100 members – two from each state – and the House of Representatives, with 435 seats distributed according to state population.

In the Senate, Republicans hold 53 seats. Senator John Thune of South Dakota is the majority leader, while New York Democrat Chuck Schumer serves as minority leader.

In the House of Representatives, Republicans hold 219 seats and Democrats 213, with three seats vacant. Mike Johnson is the Speaker of the House, and Hakeem Jeffries is the minority leader.

Congress passes federal laws, decides on taxes and appropriations, and approves the federal budget (the fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30). Congress also confirms cabinet members and other senior officials and can remove federal officials, including the president and judges, through the impeachment process.
